IP Rating

IP (Ingress Protection) Rating refers to the international standard that defines the level of protection that electrical appliances provide against the intrusion of solid objects or dust, accidental contact, and moisture.

The rating is usually composed of two numbers, the first digit indicates the degree of protection against solid foreign bodies intruding into an enclosure, and the second represent the protection against the moisture.  

First Digit Protection against solid foreign bodies (Including the dust)

0No special protection
1Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects  greater than 50mm in diameter.
2Protection against fingers or other object not greater than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter.
3Protection from entry by tools, wires, etc., with a diameter of thickness greater than 1.0mm.
4Protection from entry by solid objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm
5 and 5KProtection from the amount of dust that would interfere with the operation of the equipment.
6 and 6KDust tight.

Second Digit Protection against the moisture environment

0No special protection
1Protection from dripping water.
2Protection from vertically dripping water.
3Protection from sprayed water.
4Protection from splashed water.
4KSame with increased pressure
5Protection from water projected from a nozzle
6Protection against heavy seas, or powerful jets of water.
6KSame at increased pressure
7Protection against immersion.
8Protection against complete, continuous submersion in water.
9KHigh pressure/steam jet cleaning
